Located in the hills west of the San Fernando valley, Calabasas has become a hot location for those wanting a more peaceful outdoor lifestyle while still maintaining close proximity to all the big-city amenities of Los Angeles. You don’t have to leave this charming community to find plenty to do, however; both residents and visitors should check out these local attractions before hitting the 101 in search of adventure elsewhere:
1. Calabasas Commons – For upscale shopping and dining, look no further than this open-air mall featuring Mediterranean architecture, welcoming landscaping, and a plethora of shops and restaurants for every taste. As home to the Edwards Calabasas Stadium 6, the Commons is your destination for entertainment as well.
2. Leonis Adobe Museum – This historic adobe brick house, formerly home of Miguel Leonis and Espiritu Chijulla, is a living history museum giving visitors a fascinating window into California ranch life in the 1800s.
3. Malibu Creek State Park – If the views here seem familiar to you, that’s because you’ve likely seen them on TV or in the movies! Once owned by 20th Century Fox Studios, Malibu Creek State Park once served as a set to shows like M*A*S*H. It’s the perfect place to experience the beauty of the Santa Monica Mountains.
4. King Gillette Ranch – Also located in the Santa Monica Mountains, King Gillette Ranch opened as a public park in 2007. It’s a haven for sensitive flora and fauna of the region and an excellent hiking destination.

6. Los Angeles Pet Memorial Park – Established in 1928, this pet memorial park is one of the oldest of its kind on the west coast. Open for visitation daily, the park offers a serene location for beloved companion animals’ final resting place. As you’d expect this close to Hollywood, many famous animal companions are buried here.
7. Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve – Visitors to this park enjoy hiking, biking, and horseback riding amid the scenic beauty of rolling hills and valleys. This 2,983-acre open space became a public park in 2003.
8. Malibu Temple – Built in 1981, this temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Venkateswara, and is built in traditional South Indian style. Visitors are welcome to come and learn about the temple; there is no entrance fee, but donations are appreciated.
9. Gates Canyon Park – This seven-acre park features Brandon’s Village, a universally accessible playground designed by Shane’s Inspiration, as well as picnic areas with barbecues, a fitness course, tennis courts, a basketball court, and an open grass area.
10. Juan Bautista de Anza Park – This park on the outskirts of Calabasas offers indoor and outdoor facilities for rent for your events, as well as beautiful views of the surrounding hills. It also hosts Calabasas’ annual Pumpkin Festival each October.
